Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has stated the government is no longer considering the creation of a new lower Thames crossing for vehicles.

Three original proposals were put forward to help alleviate traffic conditions in the capital for road users wishing to traverse from the north to south of the city and vice versa, but plans for connecting the A2 Swanscombe Peninsula with the A1089 have now been dropped.

As a result, the government will now examine the feasibility of creating a second link at the existing A282 Dartford-Thurrock crossing and for connecting the M2 with the A13 and the M25 between junctions 29 and 30.

The decision follows a public consultation on the proposals carried out by the Highways Agency.

Mr McLoughlin commented: "We had over 5,700 responses to the consultation and we have carefully considered each of them. Ruling out the least attractive option now gives some clarity for local residents and businesses."
