Central government has been urged to take a more approach to improving road safety in the UK.
According to Robert Gifford, executive director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), local authorities should have less freedom over road safety budgets, as ongoing cuts in public spending could have a considerable impact on road safety in the years ahead.
He commented: "The question is whether local authorities can find money from other sources as well, through better use of existing materials and getting people to work slightly differently through sharing expertise across the authority."
Mr Gifford added that as a result, leadership is needed from central government to ensure road safety remains a top priority for councils up and down the UK, including a clear message that road safety matters.
PACTS is a registered charity which aims to advise and inform members of the Parliament regarding safety issues in the roads, rail and air transport sectors.
