The Highways Agency (HA) has issued a response to a recent report from the Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA).

According to the findings of the RSMA, 40 per cent of road markings on dual carriageways and motorways in Scotland are in need of immediate replacement, while 25 per cent of all markings across the UK are sub-standard.

It added that 38 per cent of motorway and 36 per cent dual carriageway markings in England were in need of immediate replacement.

However, the HA issued a statement in response to the results, which read: "RSMA's survey was not comprehensive and it is not clear how they chose which parts of our network to survey."

The organisation added that it regularly holds its own reviews into the state of the country's road markings and where action is found to be required, these issues are remedied promptly, usually as part of scheduled road maintenance programmes.
