New research from Warranty Direct has highlighted the significant proportion of vehicles that fail just as their warranty expires.

According to the insurer's data – based on the policies of 50,000 vehicle owners across the UK – 50.7 per cent of all vehicles suffer some form of mechanical failure at between 60,000 and 70,000 miles – just past the typical 60,000 limit for most new car warranties.

The most common issues to arise based on the report's findings were axle and suspension problems (25 per cent), followed by electrical component and system failure (19.6 per cent).

Overall, Toyota vehicles were found to take the longest to repair on average (2.81 hours of labour), compared to the swiftest fixes for Fiat models (1.57 hours).

Duncan McClure Fisher, managing director of Warranty Direct, said: "You shouldn't expect a new car to break down in its first three years but there is a reason that manufacturers, for the most part, limit their warranties to three years/60,000 miles and our research highlights that reason."
