The latest BCA Pulse data has revealed used car values in the UK reached their highest ever second-quarter level in the second three-month period of this year.

According to the findings, values rose to £5,891 – up by £197 on the same period last year – with the data significantly ahead of previous Q2 figures posted since the index was founded in 2005.

Meanwhile, average mileage when sold rose considerably over the last 12 months to 59,849 miles – up from 58,746 in Q2 2011 and from 58,868 in the first three months of this year.

Last month, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) advised all those planning to purchase a used car in the UK to carry out research on any deal before moving ahead.

Head of training at the IAM Simon Elstow commented at the time: "Do your preparation before you go so you know what you're looking for. If you're not confident take a friend, get it checked at a garage, or ultimately walk away."
