The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice to drivers taking to the roads over the coming months on safely changing lanes.

Drivers should always check their mirrors and blind spot before carrying out any manoeuvre, while they should also change lanes gradually in order to give other road users time to react.

In addition, car owners should signal early, as other drivers will be more likely to be accommodating and let them out if they are given plenty of notice.

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "By using your mirrors, keep a 360-degree awareness of the traffic around you when on the motorway to make changing lanes easier and safer. Always check, and then check again."

Earlier this month, the IAM also offered tips on safe motoring now the spring thaw is upon us.

According to Mr Rodger, drivers should be on the lookout for more traffic, as milder conditions mean more vulnerable road users are likely to be out and about.
