The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered advice to drivers on the best ways to stay safe when travelling in foggy conditions.

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger stated drivers should use dipped headlights and front and rear fog lights when travelling with low visibility due to fog.

Furthermore, they should use the heater or air conditioning to keep the inside of windows and the windscreen clear, while the wipers should also be used intermittently to clear moisture on the glass.

Finally, motorists should tailor their speed to the extent of their visibility – if the fog becomes thicker, drivers should slow down.

He commented: "Don't underestimate the effect fog has on your visibility. Adjusting your driving to the weather conditions will help you to become a safer and more confident driver through the winter months."

Earlier this month, Mr Rodger also advised on the dangers of heavy rain, highlighting the fact that motorists should cut their speed over the coming months and be extra vigilant behind the wheel.
