The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has called for a crackdown on drink-driving offences in the UK.

Research carried out by the organisation has revealed that half of the population (50 per cent) want to see stronger penalties for those convicted of drink-driving, with 80 per cent of respondents stating repeat offenders should see their vehicles seized and scrapped.

Furthermore, 79 per cent said a reduction in the present legal drink-drive limit would not have an adverse impact on their enjoyment during a night out.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "The support is there for tougher treatment of drink drivers.

"Not only do the majority want a lower limit – they also want tougher punishment for those that break the law."

Earlier this month, the IAM responded to the AA's new Young Drivers At Risk report, highlighting the need for greater thorough tuition of young people in road safety before allowing them free reign behind the wheel of a vehicle.
