In celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is highlighting the considerable advances in road safety that have taken place during Her Majesty's 60-year reign.
The organisation noted the introduction of the MOT test, drink drive limits and the compulsory use of seatbelts as key laws which all received royal assent.
IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "I'm delighted to say that road safety still receives royal support, in the form of the IAM's patron the Duke of Kent and the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards."
However, the organisation also highlighted the continuing toll of accidents, revealing that last year there were 1,850 preventable fatalities on the UK's roads.
Meanwhile, GEM Motoring Assist is also stressing the continuing importance of local authority partnerships to improving road safety across the country through the launch of new research to examine the impact of diminishing budgets in this area.
