The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has highlighted the biggest issues facing young drivers when they first take to the roads.
Overconfidence coupled with a lack of experience were cited as being the chief reasons this group are viewed as the riskiest in terms of being involved in accidents, with 86 per cent of respondents to the IAM survey claiming these are their top concerns for newly-qualified road users.
As such, the organisation is calling for a radical rethink of the learning process for new drivers, with a greater emphasis on safety and the implementation of a number of restrictions on where and when this group can take to the roads.
Curfews for young motorists, lower speed limits and restrictions on motorway access are just some of the measures put forward to tackle this problem.
IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "There needs to be a lifelong learning approach to driving that starts at school and continues through experience and coaching into the higher risk early days of solo driving."
