The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered UK drivers advice on dealing with the issue of horses on the roads as part of its ongoing Drive & Survive initiative.
According to the organisation, horses can be unpredictable and therefore any driver faced with these animals should use considerable caution when overtaking.
Refraining from sudden movements and making loud noises is good advice to ensure the safety of both riders and motorists, while allowing plenty of room is also advised.
IAM head of training Simon Best commented: "Summer sees more vulnerable road users on the road. They have as much right as car drivers to be there, but a lack of understanding puts them at risk."
Last month, the IAM responded to the publication of the latest figures regarding an upturn in the number of serious accidents resulting injury on the UK's roads in 2011.
Mr Best noted at the time that this publication should serve as a warning to the government not to cut road safety education and budgets for helping local authorities make improvements in this area.
