The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered a number of tips to all road users on how to cut their emissions and to drive in a greener manner.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger notes there are myriad benefits to a more eco-friendly driving style, including a reduction in fuel consumption and lower emissions.
To achieve this aim, motorists should look to brake less often and anticipate what is taking place ahead of them on the road, using engine braking to slow their vehicle.
Moreover, drivers should look to use block gear changing – shifting from second to fourth when accelerating or fifth to second when braking – as this is more fuel efficient than working individually through the gears.
Finally, car owners should remove excess weight from the vehicle and avoid the use of roof racks or other bulky equipment that can spoil the aerodynamics of their car.
"We've all got better things to spend our money on than petrol. Green driving can save you up to 15 per cent on your bills, as well as reducing your carbon emissions," Mr Rodger concluded.
