The Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published its latest advice as part of its ongoing Drive & Survive initiative, this time with a focus on safe parking practices.

According to the organisation, drivers and fleet operators across the UK must remember when parking that their own and other road users' safety should be their paramount concern.

With this in mind, head of training at the IAM Simon Elstow said: "Parking is an essential part of driving which many people find stressful. Don't feel pressurised by other drivers waiting for you to park – it's important to take your time."

Earlier this month, the IAM sent an open letter to roads minister Mike Penning calling for the improvement of training for motorists concerning the safe use of rural roads.

IAM chief executive Simon Best argued that the majority of fatal accidents take place along these routes and therefore better training is required to highlight the dangers of excessive speed along rural roads.
