The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published recommendations for all drivers planning to take to the roads during the forecast stormy weather across the UK this week.

Individuals braving the elements will have to have their wits about them at all times, as high winds, lashing rain and poor visibility can all combine to make even the shortest of journeys both hair-raising and hazardous for the ill-prepared.

As a result, road users need to remember that winds can buffett their vehicle and make it difficult to steer straight. It is therefore essential drivers grip the wheel firmly at all times.

In addition, go slow enough to cope with sudden gusts and watch other vehicles to get a warning of what might be coming up ahead.

When driving in the rain also remember that cold weather can cause windows to mist up quickly. Therefore, set heating controls before embarking to ensure all your concentration can be focused on the road.
