The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published a number of tips to help young drivers stay safe.
Carrying out basic checks on their vehicle before taking to the roads is an important safety measure, with the IAM advising examining tyres, fluid levels, lights and mirrors before setting off.
In addition, young drivers should remember to avoid consuming alcohol if they plan to get behind the wheel of a vehicle, as accident figures show this group is one of the most likely to drink and drive.
Ferrying groups of friends is also a likely pastime for those who first pass their test, but young motorists should avoid the distraction of travelling with their mates and always focus on the road ahead of them.
Ultimately, the IAM advises drivers not to be cocky and to remember the dangers they face every time they set foot in a car.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger concluded: "It's important that young drivers don't see the removal of the L-plates as the end of their driving development. Skill and knowledge come with experience."
