New data from the Department for Transport highlighting a reduction in the number of road deaths during the third quarter of last year have been welcomed by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
However, the news was not all positive, as the data also showed an annual increase in the number of vulnerable road users – cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists – who were involved in serious incidents in the three-month period.
IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: "The government needs to think about which roads are the safest and where they should be dedicating their resources."
Indeed, the IAM urged the government to implement a number of new measures to improve safety for vulnerable groups, including a greater focus on cyclist awareness for individuals taking their driving test.
The news follows research recently published by the AA, which revealed the vast majority of Brits now fully support seat belt laws in the UK, despite a somewhat difficult introduction of legislation for their mandatory use 30 years ago this month.
