The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has welcomed the latest Department for Transport figures highlighting a reduction in road traffic casualties in the UK during the 12 months to the end of March 2013.

According to the data, the period witnessed a ten per cent fall in the number of people killed on the UK's roads to 1,680, while serious injuries were down by six per cent to 23,660.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: "It would seem to be good news with continued sustained falls in car occupant casualties and falls in all vulnerable categories, for example pedestrians, bikers and cyclists."

However, he added the figures only run until the end of the first quarter and therefore do not take into account the excellent summer we have seen so far, which brings with it a significant rise in the number of cyclists in particular out on the roads.

It will therefore be important to compare future data to see whether the good weather has caused any upsurge in accidents for this group.
