The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has voiced its concerns over cuts to road safety budgets being made by local authorities across the UK.

According to IAM chief executive Simon Best, there is a growing need for councils to be more cost efficient, but cutting budgets in such an important area as road safety does not make sense.

Councils made cuts of 15 per cent last year – the equivalent of £23 million – with spending on services including rehabilitation for motoring offenders, information for young drivers and the safe routes to schools scheme all being hit.

Mr Best commented: "Austerity is forcing councils to make difficult choices, but the fact that these cuts only represent the first year of savings under the coalition's spending review is deeply worrying."

Last month, the IAM highlighted the growing danger of flash flooding on the UK's roads network as a result of the significant amount of rainfall that has hit the country over recent weeks.
