The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has called on the Labour Party to bring back the use of road safety targets in order to improve injury and fatality statistics on the country's roads.
With this year's Labour Party conference in full swing, the IAM is hoping a commitment to reinstate these targets will be made, as doing so has proven to improve safety rates in the past.
IAM chief executive Simon Best argued: "Local councils, the police, the NHS and safety camera partnerships used common targets to bring their policies together. And where there was a target, they always wanted to exceed it."
Research carried out by the organisation earlier this year revealed Labour councillors across the UK are among the most dedicated to road safety, with 74 per cent stating this area is a priority for them.
As such, the IAM hopes a serious commitment will be made by the party for the reinstatement of targets for public bodies – a practice that has become commonplace in most developed nations around the world.
