Fleet managers across the UK have been advised to promote safe driving practices to their drivers as part of the ongoing Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM) Drive & Survive initiative.
Lane discipline when travelling on the motorway has been highlighted by the IAM as a key facet of safe driving, with road users advised to always signal before moving into a different lane.
Furthermore, any manoeuvres should be carried out in a smooth and controlled fashion, while drivers should have an eye on their surroundings and other motorists at all times.
IAM head of training Simon Elstow commented: "Keep an eye on your mirrors and keep a 360-degree awareness of the traffic around you to make changing lanes easier, but always double check before making the manoeuvre."
Earlier this month, data compiled by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety revealed a significant increase in the number of older drivers on the UK's roads.
However, Mr Elstow claimed there is no need for this group to be seen as an increased hazard, as it is simply a matter of ensuring older motorists are continually assessed once they reach a certain age to ensure they remain proficient behind the wheel.
