Individuals planning journeys in and around the capital over the coming months have been offered advice from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) on the best ways to stay safe.

With congestion a common problem in London and its surrounding suburbs, drivers are advised to stay calm when faced with delays and to be wary of the frustration caused in other road users, as this can lead some people to drive in an irrational and unpredictable manner.

Motorists should be prepared for pedestrians who do not look properly before stepping into traffic, as well as listening for traffic updates so they can avoid the most congested areas of the city if possible.

Furthermore, more vulnerable road users like cyclists are on the streets during the summer months and drivers should therefore give this group plenty of room.

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "If you must drive, leave in plenty of time, expect the arterial routes to be slow-moving and make sure you know which areas require you to pay a congestion charge."
