A consultation has launched today (January 6th) over the introduction of new mandatory speed limits for the M1 in South Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

Planned improvements for the route between junction 28 at Mansfield and junction 35a at Sheffield are set to include a change in the maximum speed limit to 60 mph for all road users and the Highways Agency is keen to receive feedback on the proposals from all interested parties.

Aimed at reducing levels of congestion along the route, the scheme would come into force seven days a week from 07:00 to 19:00 and follows an assessment from the Environment Agency that claims air quality in the area could suffer if action is not taken.

The consultation will run for eight weeks and coincides with plans for the expansion of the carriageway by making the hard shoulder a permanent lane for traffic to use, as well as variable speed limit technology and other traffic management systems.
