Out-of-date maps cause significant delays for many UK drivers, new research from TomTom has revealed.
Research published by the satnav device manufacturer showed 42 per cent of people who use a paper map get lost at some point on their journey.
Meanwhile, 12 per cent admitted to missing the start of an important event, such as a wedding, as a result of getting lost, while 36 per cent admitted to going astray after following someone else’s directions.
Overall, 47 per cent of respondents said they still rely on old-fashioned paper maps to reach their destinations, although 51 per cent now use satnav technology.
A spokesperson for the company said: “Britain’s road network changes by up to 15 per cent a year yet it seems that many map books used by drivers are years out of date.”
The TomTom representative added, however, that regularly updating satnav devices is also required to stay abreast of the latest changes.
