Fleet managers across the UK have been urged by road safety charity Brake to monitor the speed of their drivers more closely.

New research from Brake revealed more than a quarter (26 per cent) are not aware of the proportion of accidents involving their vehicles each year in which their driver was exceeding the speed limit.

Furthermore, it highlighted the correlation between increased speed and a higher risk of accidents. Also, the report estimated that for every 1km/h reduction in average speed, up to 2,200 lives could be saved on the roads across Europe.

Ros Cumming, professional engagement manager at Brake, commented: "Speed is one of the biggest killers on our roads … This report shows that some fleets are already addressing this risk, but there is still more that managers can do."

The use of onboard monitoring technology was recommended by the body, as this creates a record of speeds and the actions of the motorist in any given situation.
