More than one-fifth of UK drivers admit to ignoring warning lights on their vehicle's dashboard.
Research published by British Car Auctions (BCA) has found 23 per cent of motorists ignore red warning lights despite the possible damage this could be doing to their vehicle.
Tim Naylor, editor of the BCA Used Car Market Report, commented: "In some cases the vehicle may not be safe to drive and at the very least it may mean performance is compromised, which is in itself potentially dangerous."
The cost of repairs was highlighted as a major reason by 15 per cent of respondents in putting off addressing these issues, although Mr Naylor noted this could be a "false economy".
He added failing to fix problems as soon as they arise can lead to costly garage bills in the future, especially when it comes to dents and scratches, which if not repaired swiftly can lead to deterioration in the integrity of bodywork.
