GEM Motoring Assist has issued a number of simple and common sense tips to make driving on motorways that much safer for vehicle owners.

The organisation advises that motorists should remember that the hard shoulder is only for breakdowns and that stopping in this area without proper reason is an offence.

Furthermore, maintaining a two second gap to other road users is essential, while best practice for lane use is to travel in the left-most lane whenever possible, as this gives other drivers more room to manoeuvre and overtake.

David Williams, chief executive officer of GEM, commented: "Bad driving habits on motorways can severely affect the concentration and safety of the other road users, causing agitation and stress for many."

Meanwhile, GEM last month published new research highlighting growing calls for motorway driving to form part of basic training for learners, helping to give new drivers greater confidence and awareness of the risks posed by travelling on these routes.
