The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has published new figures highlighting a nationwide upturn in new car registrations across the UK in both November and the year to date.

According to the organisation's findings, the overall new car sector has seen rises of 6.99 per cent last month and 10.03 per cent over the last 11 months in comparison to the same periods of 2012.

Broken down by nation, the largest upsurge in purchases was witnessed in Wales – rising 12.83 per cent and 17.07 per cent respectively – while the lowest levels of growth were seen in England – 6.63 per cent and 9.48 per cent.

Overall, the SMMT highlighted the continuing importance of the automotive sector to the UK's economy as a whole, delivering an annual turnover of £59 billion and employing more than 700,000 individuals.

In total, the industry accounts for ten per cent of total UK exports and provides research and development spending of £1.7 billion a year.
