Vehicle safety specialist TyreSafe has welcomed the announcement that motorists on some of the UK's busiest motorways are to be reminded of the importance of regular tyre maintenance.
In May and June alone, the Highways Agency reported 2,500 tyre-related breakdowns on the nation's motorways, with these incidents causing considerable problems for vehicle owners, passengers and other road users.
As a result, the agency is now adding the message 'safe tyres save lives' to overhead gantries on some of the busiest stretches of the motorway network.
TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson said it is vital vehicle owners examine the state of their tyres before embarking on journeys, while checking they are properly inflated will also help reduce the likelihood of accidents in the future.
"The new message signs are a great reminder to drivers about the four small pieces of rubber that are responsible for them being able to brake or corner and arrive at their destination safely," he commented.
