The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has announced the appointment of a new chief executive.

Michael Hawes will be taking up his new position from autumn, when he will take over the reins of the organisation from outgoing interim chief executive Mike Baunton.

Mr Hawes commented: "The SMMT is a highly respected and influential trade association, valued by all stakeholders. My role will be to build on this reputation and grow the value and range of services provided to our members."

He added he will look to build on the strong relationship the organisation has not only with its members but with the whole of the European automotive sector over the coming months.

The news follows the recent announcement that the SMMT will be holding its Annual Dinner at Grosvenor House on Park Lane in London on November 26th. The event will see some of the biggest names in the UK automotive sector taking part, with a focus on recognising those individuals and organisations that are helping to promote growth in the sector.
