The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has called for the government to develop plans to account for the increasing number of older road users in the UK.

It follows the publication of research from the organisation highlighting how the number of UK motorists over the age of 90 will increase by 18 per cent over the coming five years to 12,400 people.

IAM chief executive Simon Best commented: "The government needs a strategy now on how it is going to manage more elderly drivers and make them more aware of the risks they face."

He added that while the frailty of this group might put them at greater risk of injury if they are involved in an accident, they are not intrinsically any more dangerous than any other road user.

Last month, the IAM responded to the publication of government figures highlighting an increase in the number of road casualties during the first three months of 2012, claiming greater efforts need to be made to improve road safety.
