The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued a range of tips to drivers keen to keep their vehicle safe and free from harm when parking.
Parking is one of the most important aspects of driving safely and keeping one's vehicle out of harm's way is essential and, as a result, the IAM has felt it prudent to outline some of the basics of best practice in this area to help motorists reduce the risk of damage to their car from parking inappropriately.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger advised: "Parking is an essential part of driving which many people find stressful. Don't feel pressurised by other drivers waiting for you to park – it's important to do it at a sensible pace."
Indeed, the IAM states it is always sensible to park on the left-hand side of the road when pulling up on the street – as this means drivers do not have to cross oncoming traffic – while drivers should also check their mirrors and blind spot regularly when coming to a halt and not solely rely on their parking sensors.
Meanwhile, when it comes to parking at the local supermarket, avoid choosing a bay that is close to trolley parks or corners, as these are areas where vehicles are more likely to get damaged.
In addition, when looking for a space, it is important to take one's time and to drive at a reasonable speed while avoiding stopping suddenly – as this can lead to accidents if following vehicles do not react quickly enough.
Finally, motorists are advised to reverse into a parking space whenever they can, as this not only means they are able to pull away more easily when leaving, but it is also more fuel efficient, as drivers can carry out the manoeuvre when the engine is warm, instead of driving back and forth to leave with a cold engine.
