Poor vision has been cited as the main cause of thousands of accidents across the UK each year, with road safety charity Brake urging mandatory eyesight checks for motorists as a result.
Data compiled by RSA revealed 2,900 crashes are caused each year due to poor vision, costing insurers upwards of £33 million and impacting the lives of thousands of individuals.
Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive, Brake, the road safety charity, said: "This report gives an indication of how many violent and devastating casualties on our roads could be prevented through a simple eye examination."
She added that as a result, the government should introduce mandatory eye tests for all drivers to take place every ten years to be linked to the renewal of driving licences.
Meanwhile, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents recently revealed children from low-income backgrounds are more likely to be involved in traffic incidents in the UK than their more well-off counterparts.
