The recent stormy weather across the UK has created the perfect conditions for potholes to flourish and this has resulted in a considerable rise in claims for damage caused to vehicles.

Figures published by Warranty Direct have highlighted a 22 per cent increase in claims for repairs by vehicle owners after damage was caused due to potholes in 2013, with the total bill for maintenance growing to more than £729 million.

Overall, there has been a 159 per cent rise in the cost of damage over the last three years, with councils up and down the country now being urged to do more to rectify these common hazards on routes across the UK.

Rory Buckley of Warranty Direct's potholes.co.uk commented: "This wet weather will be saturating roads right across the UK with existing potholes channelling water to weaken the road's substructure, literally paving the way for even more potholes and defects to arise."
