The Range Rover Evoque has been named as Car of the Year 2012 by visitors to the MSN Cars automotive website.

In total, more than 30,000 people voted in favour of the Evoque, with the vehicle brushing aside competition from other popular models including the Aston Martin Virage and McLaren MP4-12C.

"The Evoque is a thoroughly worthy winner and a British one too. The enthusiasm for this global smash hit is palpable. It has gorgeous looks, strong performance both on and off the road," Tom Evans, managing editor of MSN Cars, said.

He added that it is good to see this year's victor being a car that it is realistic that many people across the UK will be able to own, as normally these polls are won by supercars that are beyod the reach of the average individual.

The Evoque is available on the road from £27,955 and is available in three ranges – Pure, Prestige and Dynamic.

Each features a 2.2-litre 150hp diesel engine and six-speed transmission, with optional extras including parking assist systems, a heated steering wheel, loadspace stowage rails and Range Rover's new Tyre Pressure Monitoring System to improve safety and performance.
