The UK's automotive sector reported a record level of exports in 2012, figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have revealed.

According to the organisation's data, total vehicle output increased by eight per cent over the year to 1.58 million units, with more than 1.2 million models exported overseas – breaking the previous record set back in 2008.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt commented: "The £6 billion of investment committed to UK facilities, new model programmes and R&D signals a bright future and many new opportunities for companies in the supply chain."

He added that growth in global markets will likely offset any difficulties within Europe over the coming months for the UK's automotive firms.

Meanwhile, a report published earlier this month by the SMMT revealed a slight dip in UK commercial vehicle sales during the last 12 months.

The sector saw an overall 5.9 per cent downturn in registrations to 285,343 vehicles in total.
