More than £40 million a year could be saved if improvements were made to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's (DVLA) working practices, the trade body for commercial car leasing has said.
The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) has presented evidence to the House of Commons' Transport Select Committee highlighting a lack of electronic notifications as being responsible for an excessive administrative burden that costs businesses and the government millions of pounds.
Legal and policy director at the BVRLA Jay Parmar commented: "BVRLA members currently make more than six million separate transactions and payments to the DVLA each year, but more than five million of these involve paper notifications. We believe these cost businesses £10 million and the DVLA a further £7 million each year."
If improvements were made, such as the creation of a dedicated online portal, the government would stand to save £19 million each year, while businesses could save £22 million annually, he added.
The proposed website would allow for electronic notification of vehicle registration data, as well as application, payment for and receipt refunds of vehicle excise duty via a pre-paid account, the organisation has suggested.
