New research has been launched by GEM Motoring Assist to examine the importance of road safety partnerships across the UK.

The report will look into the difficulties being faced by local authorities throughout the country in delivering improved road safety and is set to be based on anonymous interviews with 19 road safety officers.

David Williams, chief executive of GEM, commented: "Partnership initiatives are very important and we know from experience that we can achieve a lot more through them than by working alone."

He added that the question now lies in ensuring how these schemes can be made sustainable using limited government funding in the future.

Last month saw the 80th anniversary of GEM, with the road safety organisation highlighting a number of the major changes that have taken place during the last eight decades of its operation in the UK.

Among the most important were the introduction of motorway speed limits and the drive to clamp down on drink-driving and individuals not wearing seatbelts.
