The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has come out in support of new rules that will see individuals face on-the-spot fines of £100 and the potential for points on their licence for repeat offenders who hog the centre lane of motorways.

Announced by transport minister Stephen Hammond, the proposed new sanctions will also apply to drivers who tailgate others.

He added that until now, many of these offences have generally gone unpunished simply as a result of the difficulty in bringing prosecutions in these cases.

IAM director of policy Neil Greig said: "This could free up traffic police time and allow them to maintain a higher profile. But without traffic cops out on the road to enforce this new approach it will have little impact on road safety."

The news follows the recent announcement that the Ministry of Justice is taking action to tackle the issue of individuals jumping red lights on roads up and down the country by setting up a new traffic court that will focus specifically on this offence.
