The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has called on the government to implement a number of significant changes to the law concerning drink-driving.
It follows the latest announcement that the number of drink-related fatalities on the UK's roads increased last year.
Figures from the Department for Transport highlighted a 25 per cent rise in the number of deaths attributed to alcohol consumption in 2012 and RoSPA has argued a reduction in the legal alcohol limit and more severe punishment for offenders is now required.
Indeed, the government is being urged to follow the lead of ministers in Scotland who have already agreed to plans for a reduction in the legal limit from 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood to just 50 mg.
Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at RoSPA, said: "Drivers should realise that if they choose to drink and drive there is a strong chance that they will be detected and prosecuted and that the penalties will be severe."
