Motorists travelling across the UK will no doubt come across roadworks at some point, but the Highways Agency has called for drivers to act sensibly and cut their speed when faced with on-road hazards.
Every year, there are numerous near misses and many injuries caused to agency workers as they go about their work. Therefore, motorists must remember to abide by all instructions issued in areas where road maintenance is taking place.
Tim Lyver, Highways Agency service delivery team leader, said: "Speed limits, cones and narrow lanes are there to keep road users safe, as well as provide a safe area for workers – often enabling us to keep roads open while essential work takes place."
The agency's announcement follows the unveiling of plans by the Department for Transport of a new £165 million investment in the tackling of bottlenecks on major routes up and down the UK.
A total of 72 transport projects will be covered by the scheme, with significant improvements to traffic flow being sought.
