Up to half of all professional drivers do not take wearing their seatbelt seriously, resulting in many deaths and serious injuries.

Carl Johan Almqvist, traffic and product safety director at Volvo Trucks, commented: "If more road users wore their safety belts, more than 7,000 lives would be saved every year in the EU alone. Professional drivers should serve here as an example."

However, research from Sweden's National Society for Road Safety revealed most professional drivers stated they always wear a seatbelt when using their own car, but only half did so when driving for work purposes.

It is therefore important for fleet managers to stress the need for their drivers to belt up, as failing to do so can lead to an unnecessary loss of life. The seatbelt was described as one of the simplest safety measures in all vehicles, but it is arguably one of the most important.
