Road safety charity Brake is calling on motorists across the UK to embrace reduced speed limits of 20 mph around schools, homes and community centres in order to better protect vulnerable members of society.

With children going back to school across many parts of the UK this week, the need to provide a safe environment for them to walk and cycle is paramount.

Indeed, research carried out by Brake and Direct Line revealed almost two-thirds (64 per cent) of respondents felt traffic was too fast on some or all local roads in their area. However, 63 per cent also admitted to travelling at 35 mph or more in 30 mph zones at least once a week.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive at Brake, noted this highlights a contradiction in what many drivers say they want and the manner in which they behave.

"By slowing down to 20 mph around homes, shops and schools, you'll be helping to save lives and enabling kids to walk and cycle more in their neighbourhoods," she added.
