UK car manufacturing grew by seven per cent in July, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The body revealed 128,873 cars were manufactured during the month, representing a seven per cent year-on-year increase, while 77.6 per cent of these vehicles were exported.

Year-to-date volumes were also up 1.9 per cent to 893,263 units and this demonstrates how the car manufacturing market has had a very positive first half of the year.

Mike Baunton, SMMT interim chief executive, said the sector is "continuing to follow the wider UK trend for more positive economic growth".

He added signs of a recovery are also coming from Europe as stronger production levels are finally starting to be recorded.

In order to capitalise on this, Mr Baunton stated UK manufacturers are looking to "develop innovative, high-quality products that appeal to a global customer base".
