The majority of drivers in the UK would support a ban on smoking in vehicles, new data from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has revealed.

According to a survey carried out by the organisation, 75 per cent of respondents believe that having a lit cigarette in a moving vehicle presents a serious safety risk.

The act of lighting the cigarette was viewed as the biggest potential danger due to the distraction this would cause, with 46 per cent claiming that smoking and driving should be viewed as the same as driving while using a mobile phone.

IAM chief executive Simon Best commented: "Smoking is clearly seen as a serious issue by motorists and highlights the impact of distractions in the car."

Meanwhile, breakdown specialist GEM Motoring Assist recently highlighted the dangers of arguing with passengers while driving, as this too could present a significant distraction and lead to accidents.
