The government could be set to make a landmark decision that will impact car owners and businesses across the UK, with the possible abolition of the tax disc.

According to the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), the tax disc has become a relic of the past, as it was once used as a visible indicator that a car was taxed, but this is now no longer required in the digital age.

BVRLA chief executive John Lewis said: "We estimate that removing this pointless piece of paper would save the government around £90 million a year and produce major administrative cost savings for fleet operators as well."

He added that this is a significant coup for the organisation as it has been campaigning to abolish this unnecessary cost for a number of years.

Last month, Mr Lewis also announced his displeasure at the latest changes to the London Congestion Charge. He claimed the reduction in the threshold for carbon output is nothing but a blatant "revenue-raising exercise".
