New data published by Kwik Fit has revealed up to one-third of all car owners across the UK do not have their vehicles regularly serviced.
More than one in three drivers (39 per cent) say they will forego having their car serviced this year, meaning that for 13 million motorists, the MOT will be only professional check their vehicle will undergo in the next 12 months.
Roger Griggs, director of communications at Kwik Fit, commented: "It is very concerning to find that so many motorists are thinking of skipping their next service – especially considering the number of drivers who don't make their own checks on their car."
He added areas like tyres, brakes, lights and electricals all need to be regularly maintained and failing to have checks carried out could lead to breakdowns – and possibly worse – for many road users.
Worryingly, the survey also revealed ten per cent of car owners never check the state of their tyres, while 15 per cent admit to having a problem with their brakes, but ignoring it.
