Driver training for haulage firm employees could be one of the best ways to boost road safety – but it needs to be coupled with a number of other measures.

According to Caroline Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, the number of cyclists killed on the UK's roads has risen and more needs to be done to help protect these road users.

"We … need to offer more training to both cyclists and lorry drivers, as well as the greater use of 20mph speed limits, especially in residential areas," she claimed.

The chairman of the transport committee also noted that central government bureaucracy needs to be slashed to ensure local authorities can take a more proactive approach to road safety.

In particular she would like to see the rules surrounding safety mirrors at junctions relaxed, as these help address the problem of blind spots.

"We need to quickly roll [mirrors] out at hundreds of junctions," she concluded.

Recent attendees of Brake's Fleet Safety Forum were told by the organisation's Roz Cumming that bosses need to manage risks more effectively if they are to keep their drivers and other road users safe during the Christmas holidays.
