The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered advice to drivers across the country on how best to stay safe when driving through tunnels.

IAM advanced driving instructor Peter Rodgers commented: "Though you may see a tunnel as just another stretch of road, there are specific precautions that you must be aware of and implement when using one."

As a result, he advised motorists to remember to never use their full beams when inside a tunnel, as this can easily dazzle other road users, while in two-way tunnels they should always stay as close as possible to the inside kerb.

In terms of following other traffic, it is essential vehicle owners leave plenty of space between themselves and other cars ahead, while motorists should always stay in the same lane unless signage tells them to make a change.

Finally, it is important to keep an eye out for emergency pedestrian exits, as you never know when you might need one in case of a breakdown.
