Fleet operators should take the time to examine the tyres of their vehicles on a regular basis.

According to UK director at Falken Tyres Matt Smith, this essential part of road safety can often be overlooked, but it is important that vehicle operators check tyres to ensure they offer the best grip to drivers or face the prospect of serious accidents occurring.

He commented: "The question is do you want to be safe or do you want to be legal? You can be legal at 1.6 mm, but there's a clear argument that the tyre performs better at 3 mm of tread – it evacuates more water and has more grip."

Last month saw tyre manufacturer Continental awarded the honour of being named Tyre Manufacturer of the Year at the annual Tyre and Fast Fit Awards by the National Tyre Distributors Association.

The firm received the accolade in recognition of its commitment to innovation and safety.
