The UK's automotive manufacturers are aiming to shatter production records by the end of 2015, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Figures released ahead of the International Automotive Summit revealed that more than two million units could roll off production lines in 2015, surpassing the total of 1.92 million cars produced in 1972.
If the SMMT's prediction proves accurate, the new car volumes will be more than 50 per cent higher than levels achieved in 2011.
For the record-breaking figure to be achieved, stability is required in the eurozone and continued support is needed from the government, the organisation stated.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said: "The UK automotive industry is leading economic recovery with increased manufacturing output, growing export volumes and new jobs being created on the back of major international investment in the sector."
The news comes shortly after the organisation revealed that new car registrations rose by 7.9 per cent year on year in May to 162,288 units.
